Labor urges Marcos to speed up corruption trials

Labor urges Marcos to speed up corruption trials

Call for Urgent Action Against Corruption

The Federation of Free Workers (FFW) has urged the administration of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. to accelerate the investigation and prosecution of corruption cases in the country. This call came as part of their ongoing efforts to ensure that justice is served promptly and effectively.

In a statement released in Filipino, the labor group emphasized that while they support due process, it should not be used as an excuse for delays in holding individuals accountable. They stressed that the legal system must be enforced without unnecessary prolongation.

“We uphold due process and the constitutional means of justice, but it should never be a reason for inaction or delay. The law must be enforced immediately, not prolonged. The Ombudsman and the Independent Commission for Infrastructures (ICI) must act with both courage and urgency,” said FFW president Sonny Matula.

Matula highlighted the need for a more efficient judicial process, comparing the slow movement of justice to a slow-motion film. He argued that if true justice is to be achieved, it must move at a much faster pace.

“If we truly want justice to move forward, let’s make it fast forward — double time, even triple time if needed. What’s important is the swift delivery of justice,” he added.

He also pointed out that there has been a lack of progress since the President's State of the Nation Address (SONA), where he reportedly criticized corruption. Despite this, no significant actions have been taken against high-profile individuals involved in corrupt practices.

“Four months have passed since the President said in his SONA — ‘you should be ashamed’ — yet until now, no one seems ashamed, and no ‘big fish’ from Congress or top officials have been charged,” said Matula.

This situation, according to Matula, underscores the need for concrete actions rather than mere words. He emphasized that empty speeches are not enough and that real change requires decisive steps.

“A sermon is not enough; it’s time for action. As they say, justice delayed is justice denied — especially when justice is being held up in traffic,” he concluded.

The Need for Immediate Response

The labor group's statement highlights the growing concern among citizens about the slow pace of anti-corruption efforts. It emphasizes the importance of taking immediate steps to ensure that those responsible for corruption are held accountable.

The call for a “stronger, more transparent and faster anti-corruption campaign” reflects the collective desire of various sectors to see meaningful change. Business and labor leaders have joined forces in this effort, recognizing that corruption affects everyone.

As the nation continues to grapple with issues of transparency and accountability, the message from the FFW serves as a reminder that the fight against corruption requires consistent and determined action. It is a call to action for all stakeholders to work together towards a more just and equitable society.
