Rove McManus' Wild Name Revealed

Rove McManus' Wild Name Revealed

The Origin of Rove McManus’ Stage Name

For three decades, Rove McManus has been a familiar name to fans across Australia. But behind the stage name lies a story that he has finally shared in detail. Known for his humor and charisma, Rove revealed how he came to be known as "Rove" and how it became an integral part of his identity.

During an appearance on the Kiya podcast, Rove spoke about how "Rove" began as a family nickname. His real name is John, but when he started performing at 19, he wanted to keep his identity private. He decided to use just "Rove" as his stage name. However, when he entered the world of television, he was told he needed a surname.

"I said 'John McManus' and they said, 'Well let's call you Rove McManus.'"

The name stuck, and over time, it became part of his public persona. Rove explained that everyone in his family has a nickname. "Rove" was given to him by one of his two older sisters, but no one can remember exactly why it was chosen.

"I’ve told the story about where the nickname came from," Rove said. "And my sister said to me after the fact, 'that’s not the story, that’s not how you got your nickname.'"

When he pressed her for more details, she replied, "I don’t remember, we were all too young — I just know it wasn’t [what you said it was]."

Despite the mystery, Rove continues to embrace the name. Today, his family members still use their nicknames. "My siblings call me Rove, my daughter calls me Rove." However, his mother is the only one who doesn't use the nickname. "She will still on occasion call me Johnny."

A Career Spanning Decades

Rove McManus first gained fame as the host of Rove Tonight, which debuted on Channel Nine in 1999. After the show was canceled, he found success on Channel Ten with his self-titled talk show, Rove Live, which ran from 2000 to 2009.

During this time, Rove met his first wife, Belinda Emmett, an actress best known for her role on Home and Away. Tragically, Belinda passed away from breast cancer in November 2006 at the age of 32, just 18 months after marrying Rove.

Following her death, Rove took a break from the public eye but returned to television the following year. He later found love again with actress Tasma Walton, whom he married in 2009. The couple has a daughter named Ruby, who is now 11 years old.

Throughout his career, Rove has earned three Gold Logie awards for most popular personality on Australian screens in 2003, 2004, and 2005 — all during his time on Rove Live.
