Flavor Flav Joins US Olympic Bobsleigh as Hype-Defying Fan
Flavor Flav Joins the 2026 Winter Olympics as Official Hype Man
US rapper Flavor Flav is once again stepping into the world of sports, this time by supporting the American bobsleigh and skeleton teams for the 2026 Winter Olympics in Italy. Known for his role as a founding member of the Grammy-winning group Public Enemy, Flav has taken on the position of "official hype man" for the teams. This title, commonly used in hip-hop culture, refers to a key supporter or backing vocalist who brings energy and enthusiasm to a group.

Flavor Flav, whose real name is William Jonathan Drayton Jr., first became interested in the sport during a visit to the bobsleigh and skeleton training ground at the 2002 Olympic Track in Utah. He described the partnership as a blessing, comparing it to the movie Cool Runnings, which tells the story of Jamaican athletes competing in bobsleigh at the Winter Olympics. “It’s cooler than Cool Runnings. It’s Coolest Runnings,” he said.
Despite being new to the sport, Flav showed no hesitation when he tried his hand at skeleton. When officials suggested he start lower down the track due to safety concerns, he insisted on a higher starting position. His second run reached a speed of 107 km/h, only 20 km/h slower than what elite athletes achieve during competitions.
U.S. skeleton athlete Dan Barefoot was impressed with Flav’s performance. “I was kind of upset at how good he was. It’s a sport that takes a lot of skill, but he made it look straightforward,” Barefoot said.
This is not the first time Flavor Flav has supported athletes. At the Paris Olympics, he served as the personal hype man for the U.S. women’s water polo team. He was also present when tennis legend Billie Jean King received her star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Additionally, Flav supported discus thrower Veronica Fraley when she faced financial difficulties, offering assistance after she shared her struggles on social media.
His presence has been a huge boost for the bobsleigh and skeleton teams. Athletes and staff have praised the energy and confidence he brings to the camp. “Oh my gosh, he’s one of the coolest, most adventurous men that I’ve ever met,” said Barefoot. He added, “We have all been so hyped to have him with us. Put aside the fact that Flav is one of the greatest hype men of all time, the energy in the room... you had people who often aren’t talking to each other high-fiving and hugging because of the experience of being around him.”
Fans of Flavor Flav, the US bobsleigh and skeleton team, or both, can look forward to seeing their efforts at the Milano–Cortina Winter Olympics, which will officially begin on February 6 next year.
