Flavor Flav Backs US Bobsleigh Team as Official Fan

Flavor Flav Joins the 2026 Winter Olympics as Official Hype Man

US rapper Flavor Flav is making a bold move by stepping into the world of sports once again. This time, he’s not just a fan—he’s taking on a new role as the official hype man for the American bobsleigh and skeleton teams at the 2026 Winter Olympics in Italy.

Flavor Flav, whose real name is William Jonathan Drayton Jr., has long been known for his energetic presence and contributions to hip-hop culture. As a founding member of the Grammy-winning group Public Enemy, he helped shape the sound of the genre. Now, he’s bringing that same energy to the world of winter sports.

A hype man, in the context of sports, refers to someone who provides encouragement and motivation to athletes. It's a term rooted in hip-hop culture, where backing vocalists often play a key role in energizing the crowd. Flavor Flav has taken this concept to the next level, becoming a key supporter for the U.S. teams competing in bobsleigh and skeleton.

Flavor Flav’s passion for the sport began during a recent visit to the bobsleigh and skeleton training ground at the 2002 Olympic Track in Utah. He was so captivated by the sport that he couldn’t resist trying his hand at skeleton. Despite being advised to start lower on the track due to safety concerns, he insisted on a higher starting position. On his second run, he reached speeds of 107 km/h—only 20 km/h slower than elite athletes.

“I was kind of upset at how good he was. It’s a sport that takes a lot of skill, but he made it look straightforward,” said U.S. skeleton athlete Dan Barefoot, who was impressed by Flavor Flav’s performance.

This isn’t Flavor Flav’s first time supporting athletes. At the Paris Olympics, he served as the personal hype man for the U.S. women’s water polo team. He also attended the event when tennis legend Billie Jean King received her star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Additionally, he supported discus thrower Veronica Fraley after she faced financial difficulties and publicly shared her struggles.

Now, Flavor Flav’s presence is felt throughout the bobsleigh and skeleton camps. Athletes and staff alike appreciate the positive energy he brings to the team. Dan Barefoot described him as “one of the coolest, most adventurous men that I’ve ever met.”

Barefoot continued, saying: “We have all been so hyped to have him with us. Put aside the fact that Flav is one of the greatest hype men of all time, the energy in the room ... you had people who often aren’t talking to each other high-fiving and hugging because of the experience of being around him. There’s a lot of energy and a lot of confidence around us right now.”

Fans of Flavor Flav, the U.S. bobsleigh and skeleton teams, or both, can look forward to seeing their efforts in action when the Milano–Cortina Winter Olympics officially begin on February 6 next year.
