'Jesus Christ Superstar' to Light Up Manila in 2026

Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice's iconic musical, Jesus Christ Superstar, is set to make its way to Manila. The rock opera will be staged at The Theatre at Solaire from May 2 to 24, 2026, as part of the show’s international tour. This production promises to bring the powerful story of Jesus Christ to life through a unique blend of music and drama.

The musical follows the final days of Jesus Christ, focusing on the events leading up to his crucifixion. It presents this narrative through the perspective of Judas Iscariot, who betrays Jesus for thirty pieces of silver. Alongside Judas, the story delves into the relationships and conflicts between Jesus, Mary Magdalene, the disciples, and the Roman Empire. The entire performance is delivered through a series of rock songs that have become classics over the years.

Some of the most popular tracks include Superstar, I Don't Know How to Love Him, and Gethsemane. These songs not only highlight the emotional depth of the characters but also showcase the musical’s enduring appeal across different generations.

Originally released as a concept album in 1970, Jesus Christ Superstar made its Broadway debut in 1971, marking the beginning of its long and successful journey. Since then, it has been produced on Broadway, the West End, and in various international venues. The musical has also been adapted into film, with versions released in 1973, 1999, and 2012. A live concert version was even broadcast on television in 2018, featuring John Legend as Jesus and Sara Barreiles as Mary Magdalene.

In more recent years, the show has continued to evolve. An August adaptation by the Hollywood Bowl featured Wicked star Cynthia Erivo in the role of Jesus Christ. Despite its widespread acclaim, the musical has yet to win a Tony Award, though it has received multiple nominations. In 2017, it earned the Laurence Olivier Award for Best Musical Revival, further solidifying its status as a critically acclaimed production.

David Ian, the producer of the upcoming Manila run, expressed his excitement about bringing the show to the Philippines. "After incredible success in Australia and the UK, we're delighted to be bringing Jesus Christ Superstar to Manila," he said. "This Olivier Award-winning production has amazed audiences around the world with its raw energy and breathtaking performances. Whether you've loved the show for decades or are discovering it for the first time, this will be an unforgettable experience."

While the full cast for the Manila performance has not yet been announced, fans can look forward to the opportunity to see this legendary musical live on stage. Tickets for the production will be available for pre-sale starting November 3 to 7 through UnionBank. Those who sign up for the GMG Jesus Christ Superstar waitlist will also have early access to tickets.

Public sales will begin on November 8 via Ticketworld, giving more people the chance to secure their seats for this highly anticipated event. With its rich history, powerful storytelling, and unforgettable music, Jesus Christ Superstar is sure to captivate audiences in Manila and beyond.
