Kit to Couture! Netball Stars Shine Like Hollywood Before Commonwealth Games

Scotland's Netball Stars Prepare for a Hollywood-Style Moment at the Commonwealth Games

Scotland’s netball stars are getting ready for what they call the sport’s “Hollywood moment” as they gear up for the Commonwealth Games. The event is set to take place at The Hydro in Glasgow from July 23 to August 2. This will be a significant opportunity for the team to showcase their skills on a global stage.

Tickets for the games will go on general sale on Thursday, and to celebrate this milestone, seven Scottish netball stars have participated in a special photoshoot. The shoot was directed by Gerardo Jaconelli and was inspired by the Hollywood Issue of Vanity Fair. The players involved in the shoot include Iona Christian, Hannah Leighton, Hannah Grant, Niamh McCall, Emma Barrie, Emily Nicholl, and Jazmine Moore.

The competition will feature teams from 12 and 144 nations, with Australia aiming to defend their title from 2022. So far, Australia has won four out of the seven editions of the Commonwealth Games, while New Zealand has claimed two and England one.

Captain Emily Nicholl shared her excitement about the upcoming event, saying, "The Commonwealth Games is our Olympics, and this feels like a Hollywood moment – a chance for netball to shine in front of a global audience."

She added, "Netball is high-scoring, fast, and furious – it’s one of the best sports in the world to watch."

Nicholl emphasized that every player trains, eats, and plays like an elite professional athlete, regardless of whether they are full-time or not. She also highlighted the importance of strength and confidence, stating, "The word 'beast' isn’t traditionally feminine, but why shouldn’t it be? I’ve always owned it, and I don’t want girls to shy away from strength."

Reflecting on her journey, Nicholl said, "At Glasgow 2014, I was a student watching the final at the Hydro. It wasn’t even on my radar that I could ever play for Scotland. Two years later, I won my first cap and now I could be back on that same court, competing at a home Commonwealth Games."

She expressed her hope that the event would inspire young athletes, saying, "To have a dream and see it become a possibility is incredibly special. I’ve played at two Games before, but this one would be different – surrounded by friends, family, and, hopefully, who knows maybe a few new little Emilys in the crowd dreaming their own dreams."

The Future of the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow

As the countdown begins, many are wondering if Glasgow can reimagined the Commonwealth Games to dazzle the world with a different scale and unparalleled enthusiasm. The city has already shown its ability to host major sporting events, and the 2026 Games could set a new standard for international competitions.

With a heart-pounding venue lineup across Glasgow, the event could offer a unique experience for fans and athletes alike. The question remains whether Glasgow is ready to host a scaled-down Commonwealth Games in 2026, with global attention focused on the city.

Scotland's bold bid for the Games includes plans to deliver a spectacular performance with returning star players. The success of the event could also influence the country's chances of reaching Euro 2025 glory.

Fans are eager to see if Glasgow's pared-down Games can deliver the spectacle and success that Commonwealth fans are yearning for, even with fewer sports on show. The city's ability to manage such a large-scale event will be crucial in determining the outcome of the Games.
