Undiscovered treasure now available to stream

Prime Video has recently introduced a new period drama titled Hedda, directed by Nia DaCosta. The film features Tessa Thompson in the leading role as Hedda Gabler, a woman who finds herself trapped in a monotonous marriage. Set over the course of a single night, the story revolves around a party hosted by Hedda to assist her teacher husband in securing a prestigious professorship and financial support from the university.

However, the evening takes an unexpected turn when Hedda reconnects with Eileen Lövborg (played by Nina Hoss), a former lover who unexpectedly attends the party. Alongside Tessa Thompson, the film also stars Imogen Poots, Tom Bateman, and Nicholas Pinnock. It is set in 1950s England and is based on the classic play of the same name by Norwegian playwright Henrik Ibsen.

The film made its debut at the 2025 Toronto International Film Festival on September 7 and later became available for streaming on Amazon Prime Video on October 29.

Audience reactions to Hedda have been overwhelmingly positive, with many viewers encouraging others to watch it and expressing that it deserved more promotional attention. One fan, blewis1103, shared: “Honestly? I feel like us festival attendees may have undervalued Hedda, because it’s hitting in a way that I wasn’t expecting. I don’t know how far that goes… but it might go further than people gave it credit for in September. And Amazon is seriously pushing it.”

Another viewer, tnyfrontrow, said: “Hedda is now streaming on @PrimeVideo which is its wide release; it’s terrific and, while I wish it had a long theatrical run (I saw it twice on the big screen—it’s even better the second time), hard to imagine it even existing without a streamer’s backing.”

A third fan, dancindanonfilm, commented: “Two of the best performances of the year in one of the best-written, most finely-crafted films of the year. EVERYONE SEE HEDDA!” Meanwhile, bertoni_film added: “Amazon is doing a horrible job marketing it, but tomorrow Hedda drops on streaming!! Nia DeCosta and Tessa Thompson are a match made in heaven. It has everything: Parties, lesbians, academia, affairs, and guns.”

Following its premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival, Hedda received widespread critical acclaim, earning a 90% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Critics praised the film's engaging themes and Tessa Thompson's exceptional performance.

Sarah Marrs of Lainey Gossip remarked: “Hedda is a vicious film, as unapologetically toxic and cruel as it is stylish and fun, anchored by Tessa Thompson’s beautifully awful performance.”

Amy Nicholson of the Los Angeles Times noted: “Their rollicking redo, set from dusk to hangover at a drunken bacchanal, is vibrant and viciously alive. With apologies to Ibsen’s ghost, DaCosta’s tweaks have sharpened its rage.”

Peter Bradshaw of The Guardian described the film as: “Ibsen meets Downton Abbey in Nia DaCosta’s exotic rendering of the classic play.”

Currently, Hedda is available to stream on Amazon Prime Video.
